This is a compilation CD, whose songs look at life through older eyes. With so many songs about the trials and joys of young love and life, I wanted to present an alternative: songs looking back at life or describing feelings of the older person, especially as baby boomers become senior citizens.

The project is not, for once, focused on the singer/s; rather songs about the experience/s of older persons, so the lead vocals are by seven different singers and the songs are taken from all over the world.

It is hoped the project will inspire other such views of life, and Volume II is already on the drawing board.

Track listing:

Coming Home, Lies, Mona Gibson, Glad When It’s Over, The Anniversary, The Orchard, 200-Year-Old Alcoholic, Rubbish, Take Your Time, The Dutchman, The Jim Pike Song, Father Time, Wind In The Pines, Grey Power Blues.

Artists:

Wendy Ealey: a Melbourne-based singer and multi-instrumentalist with a glorious voice who has featured at numerous festivals all over Australia

Phil Emerson: a Canberran who is well-known at folk festival campsites, lead singer and guitarist with Divided By Three, from whose Cd this track is taken.

Chris Fraser: a singer-songwriter who has issued several CDs; this song has been adopted by veterans and families in Australia and the US.

Neil Gardner: from the Apple Island, where he has for many years been widely regarded as the state’s best singer-songwriter.

Rose Harvey: a Tasmanian, her re-emergence after many years away from music has seen her performing as a solo, in duos and with several bands, especially at Queensland festivals; audiences love her as mandolinist and singer.

David O’Connor: has been writing and singing for nearly 40 years, and has even had a top ten hit in Mongolia: this project is his conception.

Martin Pearson: better known as folk’s funniest and smartest performer, he also possess one of the genre’s best voices and perhaps the most extensive repertoire of serious and beautiful songs.

All of the singers have their own CDs and their experience totals hundreds of years (though they all claim to be still young…); all were generous in recording or granting use of a track from their CD to support the project. Income from sales will be devoted to production of Volume II of Senior Moments – there are still lots of good senior songs out there!

CD Review by Graham Blackley

This compilation, which features Wendy Ealey, Phil Emerson, Chris Fraser, Neil Gardner, Rose Harvey, David O’Connor and Martin Pearson, taps into the needs, memories, humour and reflections of those listeners and performers who are “not old, just mature.”

The lyrics traverse a range of topics such as: the heady joys of growing old disgracefully (200-Year-Old Alcoholic); the dangers of living solely in the present whilst failing to honour and respect the symbols, signifiers and individuals that appear to represent the past (Rubbish) and the significant yet often unheralded contributions made by those who are in the midst of “maturity” rather than in the blossom of youth (Grey Power Blues).

Highlights include: the crystal clear vocals and deft mandolin playing of Wendy Ealey on Glad When It’s Over; the assured and authoritative vocal presence of Chris Fraser on the dramatic Wind In The Pines and; and Frog’s haunting pedal steel on David O’Connor’s The Anniversary.
