Our new ‘Session Tunebook’
collection (a boxed kit with
four books and a companion
CD) had its offi cial book
launch at the Easter National
Folk Festival in Canberra, and
was a raging success!
We had two workshops that
were very well attended, and sold
out all copies we had brought with
us by the second day of the festival.
We arranged an emergency
overnight delivery of more kits
via a Greyhound bus, and that
consignment sold out in a few
hours.
The Festival Shop had folks
asking for them all weekend, and
it was obvious we could have sold
three times the amount we had!
But we’re not complaining: a
sellout is a sellout.
The ‘Session Tunebooks’ are the
latest addition to Bluegum Music’s
catalogue.
We’ve had our three dance
resource kits ‘Bush Dance, Social
Dance,’ and ‘Rig-a-Jig-Jig’ for
many years (the original Bush
Dance was released in 1981) and
the highly successful ‘Campfi re
Songbook’ (from 1991).
Over the years, we’ve sold tens
of thousands of these kits, mostly
to schools.
We’ve recently re-released an
updated version of the ‘Campfi re
Songbook’ – that now includes a
companion CD (of MIDI fi les) – and
this had its offi cial re-launch at
Brisbane’s Kookaburra Folk Club in
February, and at the Port Fairy Folk
Festival in March.
Bluegum Music started in 1981
as a joint venture between Alan
and Robyn Craig (aka Rantan
Bush Band of Brisbane) and Mike
Jackson (aka Flying Wombat Music,
now of Melbourne).
Rantan had not long published
its fi rst ‘Bush Dance’ kit (12
illustrated folk dances with a
cassette – oh, how the times have
changed!) and Mike wanted to do a
similar thing for little kids; so, ‘Riga-
Jig-Jig’ was born.
It wasn’t long before second
volumes of both of these were
released and, in 1988, we added
the third volume of bush dances
called the ‘Bicentenary Bush
Dance’.
Mike had, by this time, several
gold albums to his credit and was
doing extremely well with his school
tours both here and overseas.
He wanted to release a collection
of sing-along songs, and so we put
together the ‘Campfi re Songbook’,
which was an immediate success.
By this time, having three
volumes of bush dances was
becoming a bit unwieldy, so we
combined much of our material into
a single title (‘Bush Dance’), and
added a collection of modern and
novelty dances under a new title,
‘Social Dance’.
In 2008, we fi nally fused both
volumes of ‘Rig-a-Jig-Jig’ into a
single book and have plans to add
to that collection in the near future.
I had always thought that
we should have a collection of
traditional tunes in our catalogue,
so I assembled playlists from
sessions in Britain, Ireland, the US
and Australia.
From these, I gleaned the most
commonly-played tunes and put
them together into four books: one
of jigs, one of reels, one of polkas
and ceilidh tunes, and one of
hornpipes, et al.
I have always thought that most
fi ddle tune collections suffered from
two main drawbacks: they were
usually too big to carry around in
a fi ddle case, and they were often
quite expensive.
By printing our tunebooks in A5
format, we knocked both those
problems on the head in a single
stroke.
Mike learns all his music by ear
and was keen that we also include
an audio resource for those who
weren’t keen on the dots.
The 306 tunes in the books
would generate about eight CDs of
audio, so we settled on making the
companion CD a collection of MIDI
fi les.
These are designed for using on
a computer and, while not sounding
as good as tunes played by real
musos on real instruments, they
offer the great advantages of being
able to alter tempo, key, instrument
voices, and even the notes
themselves – a perfect learning
environment.
We also included MP3 versions
of these arrangements and 16
sets of playable sets with nice key
changes.
Every tune is arranged for
fi ddle, tenor banjo and tin whistle
with guitar and double bass
accompaniment.
The tin whistle parts are for
the standard ‘D’ whistle with
modifi cations for melodies that are
in awkward keys or out of range.
All titles will be available
from the Trad&Now Catalogue
