CD REVIEW

Raised on the Road

by John Williams

What can I say about these two talented brothers that hasn’t already been said?

They have been a highly visible part of the Australian Folk, Bluegrass and Country scene for many years now, even though both are still quite young.

Their list of awards is a page long already and they are quickly becoming known to a very wide audience having appeared on a number of popular TV shows.

In 2003 they won Country Entertainer of the Year at Tamworth and this year, Hamish won the title of Australian Bluegrass Mandolin Champion, while Lachlan won the Horizon Award.

So you’ll know what you are going to get on this CD.

It was recorded in Nashville and utilizes the skills of US musicians Randy Kohrs, Brian Sutton and Dennis Crouch as accompanists.

There are 12 tracks on the CD and the brothers wrote 10 of them.

The brothers write about their life on the road and some of their life experiences.

“Lonely Again Tonight” is a song about the pain of a shy, young bloke with the blues.

“Walkin’ Round Blind” brings back the realities of life at 15 and that theme continues with “Where I Want to be”.

“It’s a Banjo” made me laugh.

“Don’t Turn Me Down” was my favorite track with Hamish’s mandolin on fire.

“Davidson County”, “Mojo”, and “Scrub Turkey” are great instrumental tracks written by the Davidson Brothers.

“Scrub Turkey” in particular is fast paced Bluegrass music at its finest.

“Sometimes” shows a young man questioning his life and the constant changes it brings.

It is terrific to see the development of these young Aussies in the World’s musical scene from the two skinny youngsters in the big white hats floating around festivals doing chalkboard gigs to the assured singer/songwriter performers of today.

They have a fairly large thank you list of people who have encouraged them along the way on the CD.

There’s a lesson there for people who think we should be overly critical of beginners and people having a go (I’ll get off the soapbox now).

If you like Bluegrass and want to hear two of Australia’s finest playing it, then I can highly recommend this CD.

It will not disappoint.
